On the night of May 22, Russia launched 124 attack drones of various types against Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense forces managed to destroy the majority of the aerial targets, although some drones still managed to hit their targets.
This was reported by the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Various components of Ukraine’s defense forces were involved in repelling the attack, including:
- aviation units
- anti-aircraft missile forces
- electronic warfare units
- mobile fire groups
- unmanned systems units
In total, preliminary data indicates that 115 drones of the “Shahed,” “Gerbera,” “Italmas,” and other types were shot down or suppressed.
Damage from the attack
Despite the effectiveness of air defense, some drones reached their targets.
Seven strike UAV impacts were recorded across five locations, with debris from downed drones falling in five additional areas.
Officials report that the attack is ongoing, with several UAVs still detected in Ukrainian airspace.
As previously reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the war may be approaching a turning point, and international pressure on Russia should be increased.
It is also noted that one of the occupiers’ near-term objectives may be an attempt to seize Sumy or Kharkiv, with possible offensive scenarios being considered in those directions.
