Russian forces launched a drone attack on the city of Konotop on Wednesday, May 20. As a result of the strike, a 94-year-old local woman was killed and 11 civilians were injured, according to the police of the Sumy region.
Rescuers recovered the victim’s body from under the rubble of a five-story residential building after a drone hit one of its entrances.
Among the injured are nine women and two men aged between 50 and 88.
Police officers arrived at the scene immediately after the attack, helping residents evacuate damaged buildings, providing first aid, and securing the area. Body camera footage captured the first moments after the strike.
Investigative teams, explosives experts, and emergency services are currently working at the impact sites. Ukrainian law enforcement officials are documenting the consequences of the attack and collecting evidence related to a potential Russian war crime. A criminal case has been opened under Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.
The overnight assault was part of a wider wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine. The city of Dnipro suffered the heaviest damage, with five people injured, two of them seriously, and food warehouses damaged. Strikes were also reported in Kharkiv and Odesa.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 154 strike drones. Air defense forces reportedly shot down 131 enemy drones.
