U.S. President Donald Trump said he does not believe the United States needs China’s assistance to resolve tensions with Iran, though he plans to discuss the issue with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during an upcoming meeting, according to CNN.

“I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll win one way or another — either peacefully or otherwise,” Trump told reporters.

Asked what message he would convey to Xi, Trump said the Chinese leader had been “relatively good,” noting that despite China’s reliance on oil from the region, there had been no issues related to the situation. “He’s my friend,” Trump added.

Moments later, Trump downplayed the importance of discussing Iran with Beijing, saying the U.S. is “largely in control” of the situation. He indicated that trade — not Iran — would be the primary focus of talks with Xi.

“We have a lot to discuss. Honestly, I wouldn’t say Iran is among the main topics, because we fully control the situation there. Either we make a deal, or they will be defeated,” he said.

Trump is set to visit China from May 13 to 15, where he will hold his second meeting with Xi since the start of his second presidential term. Reports suggest key topics will include trade relations, China’s purchases of Iranian oil, and broader geopolitical tensions, including U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
