European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has responded to Russia’s large-scale overnight strike on Kyiv on May 14, which resulted in nine deaths, calling it one of the longest and most brutal attacks in recent memory.

In a post on X, she said the attack demonstrated Russia’s continued disregard for diplomatic efforts and its ongoing indiscriminate strikes against civilians, while reaffirming the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.

Von der Leyen announced that the European Union is finalising a €6 billion assistance package for Ukraine, focused primarily on drone procurement. She also said the EU is preparing to further tighten sanctions against Russia in response to its continued aggression.

“We are finalising a €6 billion drone support package. And we are continuing to apply pressure on Russia’s war economy with increasingly tough sanctions,” she stated.
