The increase in global oil and fuel prices has once again made fuel efficiency a key concern for drivers. Hybrid vehicles — combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor — have become especially relevant due to their lower fuel consumption.
According to a new study by Consumer Reports, experts conducted real-world fuel economy tests on hybrid cars across different segments.
How the testing was done
The evaluation included two stages:
Highway driving at 100 km/h in both directions (to account for wind, road surface, and other variables)
Simulated city and suburban driving with more complex traffic conditions
The results from both tests were combined to calculate average fuel consumption.
🚗 Most fuel-efficient hybrids by segment
Notably, all winners come from one manufacturer — Toyota, which continues to dominate hybrid technology.
Toyota Prius — most efficient small car: 4.6 L/100 km
Toyota Camry — most efficient midsize sedan: 4.9 L/100 km
Toyota Crown — most efficient large sedan: 5.6 L/100 km
Toyota Corolla Cross — most efficient compact SUV: 5.7 L/100 km
Toyota Crown Signia — most efficient midsize SUV: 6.3 L/100 km
Toyota Highlander — most efficient large SUV: 6.7 L/100 km
Toyota Sienna — most efficient minivan: 6.5 L/100 km
📊 Key takeaway
The dominance of Toyota is driven by:
long-term investment in hybrid powertrains
advanced battery technology
efficient energy management systems
👉 As a result, Toyota vehicles consistently deliver some of the lowest real-world fuel consumption figures across multiple segments.
