Ukraine, like much of Europe, is experiencing an intense heatwave that is expected to significantly increase electricity consumption and place additional pressure on the country’s power grid, according to YASNO CEO Serhii Kovalenko.

He said that in Kyiv, every 3°C rise in temperature adds roughly 100 MW of demand to the energy system.

The increase is driven not only by household air conditioners but also by large cooling systems operating in offices, shopping malls, stores, and industrial facilities.

However, rising electricity demand is only part of the challenge.

“Extreme heat is also a serious test for equipment that has been operating under wartime conditions for more than four years and has survived repeated attacks,” Kovalenko said.

He noted that while energy workers managed to stabilize the grid after the winter strikes, repair and recovery work is still ongoing. As a result, part of the infrastructure remains under maintenance, while the rest is operating close to its limits.

“The power system will be under significant strain in the coming days. I hope we will get through this period without major restrictions, but we should be prepared for different scenarios,” he added.

Kovalenko advised consumers to charge power banks and electronic devices in advance and closely monitor updates from energy providers.

Earlier, experts warned that Ukraine could face scheduled power outages in July and August if Russia launches large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure during periods of extreme heat.

Kyiv is considered particularly vulnerable to outages due to its large concentration of critical infrastructure and widespread use of air conditioning, which sharply increases electricity demand.
