Long queues have formed at the Poland–Ukraine border in recent days, with some travelers waiting more than 12 hours to enter Ukraine due to a surge in passenger traffic.
According to State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andrii Demchenko, border crossings traditionally become busier on weekends, pushing waiting times even higher than on weekdays.
Videos circulating on social media show lengthy traffic jams at the border. At the Krakivets checkpoint alone, more than 260 vehicles were waiting to cross into Ukraine.
Demchenko said the congestion is caused by increased passenger flows on both sides of the border.
“Yesterday we recorded the highest border traffic volume in June, with 141,000 people crossing the border. There was a slight increase in the number of people entering Ukraine,” he said.
Border situation
Polish authorities had previously warned that bus processing at the Shehyni–Medyka border crossing could be temporarily suspended due to repair work at one of the busiest checkpoints.
However, Ukraine and Poland later agreed to maintain uninterrupted bus traffic through the crossing throughout the summer season.
Despite that agreement, roadworks that began on June 15 continue to slow border procedures, reducing the checkpoint’s capacity for buses and causing significant delays.
Earlier reports indicated that buses have been waiting between eight and 12 hours at the Poland–Ukraine border because of the ongoing repairs. Poland has announced additional measures aimed at easing congestion.
