King Charles III has formally accepted Keir Starmer's resignation as Britain's prime minister and asked Andy Burnham to form a new government, The Guardian and Sky News reported.

Burnham accepted the monarch's invitation, becoming the UK's seventh prime minister in the past decade.

The new prime minister said his first calls in office would be with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He said he would assure Zelensky that Britain's support for Ukraine would remain "steadfast" and "resolute."

In his first speech, Burnham pledged to boost employment opportunities for young people by reforming the education system, expanding mental health support and increasing the construction of council housing.

He also said Britain had made several mistakes in the 1980s and promised his government would act as "a switch to power Britain," delivering the country's biggest changes in the past 40 years.

Analysts have noted that Burnham is backed by the Labour Party's moderate left, where some members favor reducing defense spending—a position that could affect future British military assistance to Ukraine.
