King Harald V of Norway died on August 28 at the age of 89, after 35 years on the throne, Reuters reports. Harald was hospitalized for more than a week before his death and had been treated for a serious infection.

Harald was widely regarded as one of Norway’s most popular monarchs and was known for modernizing the monarchy while preserving its traditions. He also became an important unifying figure during periods of national tragedy, including after the 2011 terrorist attacks.

He ascended the throne in 1991 and was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, had already performed the king’s duties during periods when Harald was unable to do so.

Following his father’s death, Haakon ascended the Norwegian throne, becoming king at the age of 53. He is expected to reign as King Haakon VIII. His daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, is now the heir apparent.

Norway has declared a period of national mourning. Harald is expected to be buried in the royal mausoleum at Akershus Fortress following a funeral at Oslo Cathedral.
