Poland has begun strengthening security at border crossings with Ukraine following recent Russian strikes near its territory, Reuters reports.

Military engineers are installing protective structures and setting up observation and security posts near key crossings.

The move follows Russian strikes over the weekend near the Polish border. On Sunday, a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Ukrainian territory near Poland. Another drone reportedly hit a truck at a nearby gas station.

The threat temporarily forced Polish border guards to suspend passenger and vehicle traffic. People were evacuated from their vehicles, while border officers took shelter until the danger passed.

“Recent days have shown that Russia’s actions pose a threat to the security of all of Europe. In line with the government’s decision, the infrastructure used by the Border Guard is being strengthened,” Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

The Polish military said engineering units are installing special fortification structures made of metal mesh containers that can be filled with sand or gravel. They can help protect against blast waves and serve as supporting structures.

Observation and security posts are also being built near the Polish-Ukrainian border around the crossings at Dorohusk, Medyka and Korczowa.

Border security measures

The measures follow a Russian strike near the Yahodyn border crossing, where a gas station and trucks caught fire. Poland’s Border Guard said a drone hit a truck approximately 800 meters from the Polish border.

Separately, traffic arrangements at the Shehyni–Medyka crossing are expected to change from September 20 because of repair work on the Polish side. Buses from Ukraine will be redirected through the Krakivets–Korczowa, Smilnytsia–Krościenko and Nizhankovychi–Malhowice crossings.

The temporary arrangement is expected to remain in place until November 2027.
