President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expects to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in the second half of September and plans to raise the issue of U.S. support for Ukraine’s missile program.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine is developing its own Freya missile program and hopes to receive U.S. support for the initiative.

According to the president, Kyiv is confident it can secure the desired outcome with its European partners, but until then Ukraine needs American ballistic missile packages.

“I am counting on a meeting with Trump in the 20s [of September] to raise this issue. God willing, there will be a result,” Zelenskyy said.

Talks moving toward trilateral format

The president also said Ukraine and the United States are moving toward a trilateral negotiating format involving Russia.

“We agreed with the American side: let’s prepare all of this among ourselves first, and then communicate it,” Zelenskyy said.

Earlier, Zelenskyy proposed holding a new round of U.S.-brokered negotiations on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York at the end of September.

He said Ukraine plans to use the coming two months to bring the diplomatic process back to an active phase.

The United States is also exploring possible winter de-escalation measures between Ukraine and Russia alongside the resumption of broader peace talks. Among the ideas under discussion are measures concerning energy infrastructure, grain supplies, and oil and gas exports.
