A large forest fire in the border area of Chernihiv region, caused by shelling, cannot currently be actively extinguished due to ongoing Russian FPV drone attacks, reports NV.
According to the State Emergency Service, the fire has already spread across roughly 2,400 hectares of forest, about 5 km from the border with Russia. Firefighters are unable to access many areas because of two major risks: continued drone activity and the presence of unexploded ordnance in the forested zone.
Emergency crews are instead focusing on monitoring the fire and preventing further spread. Preventive measures, including the creation of mineralized firebreaks, are being implemented to stop flames from reaching nearby settlements where people live.
Authorities note that the affected area has been pre-divided into forest sectors for fire management purposes. If the fire does not cross into adjacent sectors, it may eventually burn out on its own without direct suppression in those zones.
The blaze is affecting the Yelinskyi and Tykhonovytskyi forestry areas within the Korukivka branch of the state enterprise Forests of Ukraine. The ignition point was detected through surveillance cameras installed in the forest.
Officials emphasize that priority is currently given to protecting nearby communities while limiting further spread of the fire under extremely dangerous conditions.
