Businessman and close associate of the president Timur Mindich has explained why he filed a lawsuit against Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In a comment to the Ukrainian media outlet Ukrainska Pravda, Mindich said he is seeking to have the presidential decree imposing sanctions on him declared illegal and annulled. He insists that he did not commit the actions he is being accused of.

“I am being accused of things I did not do,” he was quoted as saying.

According to earlier reports, sanctions against Mindich were introduced following a corruption scandal linked to the energy sector. The restrictions were imposed for three years, although the government had reportedly proposed a 10-year term. The sanctions apply to Mindich as an Israeli citizen.

On May 14, Mindich filed a lawsuit with Ukraine’s Cassation Court seeking to invalidate the sanctions decree.

Investigators allege that participants in a large-scale corruption scheme in the energy sector laundered around $100 million in illicit funds. It is also reported that Mindich left Ukraine for Israel shortly before searches were conducted.
