A senior Ukrainian military officer who was previously charged in a corruption case involving the embezzlement of defense funds has now been formally accused of illicit enrichment involving tens of millions of hryvnias, according to Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.
Investigation uncovers new assets
The suspect previously served as Commander of Logistics for the Ukrainian Air Force Command and was charged in February over the alleged misappropriation of budget funds allocated for the construction of protective infrastructure for military aviation.
Although the Prosecutor General's Office did not identify the officer by name, RBC-Ukraine, citing sources, reported that the suspect is Colonel Andrii Ukrainets.
Investigators now allege that between 2020 and 2025, the officer acquired assets worth at least UAH 20 million ($480,000) more than his declared lawful income.
Property allegedly registered under relatives' names
According to the investigation, the assets were formally registered under relatives and associates, including:
- Six apartments in Kyiv, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr;
- Three houses in the Zhytomyr region;
- An apartment in Bukovel;
- Six land plots;
- Four vehicles, including Audi Q7 and Audi Q5 SUVs;
- Garages and other non-residential properties.
The assets were allegedly registered in the names of the officer's parents, son, partner, and a close associate, while investigators believe he remained their actual owner and controlled their use.
Authorities said they found no legitimate sources of income that could explain the acquisitions.
Possible sentence
The officer has been charged under Article 368-5 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which covers illicit enrichment.
Prosecutors have also requested that the court place him in pre-trial detention, with the option of posting bail set at more than UAH 21 million.
"The defense sector is no place for personal enrichment, especially during wartime," Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said.
Previous corruption case
According to RBC-Ukraine, investigators detained Colonel Andrii Ukrainets in February alongside Volodymyr Kompanychenko, then head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) office in the Zhytomyr region.
They are suspected of attempting to obtain a $320,000 bribe in exchange for concealing the alleged embezzlement of UAH 1.4 billion allocated for the construction of protective shelters for military aircraft.
