Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk claimed a major career milestone by winning the Madrid Open, one of the most prestigious events on the WTA Tour.
In the final, the 23-year-old defeated “neutral” athlete Mirra Andreeva, currently ranked world No. 8. Kostyuk secured a straight-sets victory, 6:3, 7:5, in just over an hour and a half.
This triumph marks the biggest title of her career at the WTA 1000 level and her third overall trophy. The Kyiv-born player also made history as the first Ukrainian to reach finals across all WTA tournament categories within a single season.
Andreeva, 19, has previously drawn attention for public interactions with Russian official Mikhail Kotyukov and social media activity perceived as supportive of Russia.
