UEFA fines Shakhtar Donetsk over dangerous injury incident

Donetsk-based Shakhtar have been fined following a serious on-field injury to young player Izaki Silva.

UEFA announced that the club must pay a €10,000 fine for:

  • failing to follow protocols for handling serious injuries
  • breaching safety rules under the concussion charter, part of UEFA’s medical regulations

Coach also sanctioned

Head coach Arda Turan has been fined €20,000.
He was found responsible for:

  • violating general conduct principles
  • ignoring procedures designed to protect player health

What happened

The incident occurred on April 9 during the first leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League quarterfinal between Shakhtar and AZ Alkmaar.

  • In the 11th minute, the 19-year-old Izaki collided with an opponent and lost consciousness
  • Despite receiving medical attention, he returned to the pitch
  • He was substituted only in the 24th minute

Player background

Izaki joined Shakhtar from Fluminense FC last summer for around €10 million.
