The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially got underway on Thursday, June 11, with hosts Mexico defeating South Africa 2–0 in the opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The Azteca stadium made history by becoming the first venue to host matches at three different men’s World Cups (1970, 1986, and now 2026).

A star-studded opening ceremony preceded the match, with Colombian singer Shakira headlining the event. Additional opening celebrations are scheduled for June 12 in Toronto and June 13 in Los Angeles.

Mexico took an early lead in the 9th minute when Julián Quiñones capitalized on a defensive error to score the tournament’s opening goal. The hosts controlled much of the first half, maintaining pressure and possession.

South Africa’s situation worsened early in the second half after defender S. Sitole was sent off for a last-man foul near the edge of the penalty area.

Mexico doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Raúl Jiménez scored with a header, effectively sealing the result.

Final score: Mexico 2–0 South Africa
Goals: Quiñones (9’), Jiménez (67’)

South Africa also ended the match with disciplinary problems, receiving multiple cards and struggling to regain control after the red card.

With this result, Mexico makes a strong start to the tournament as host nation, while South Africa return to the World Cup stage after a 16-year absence.

Group A also includes the national teams of Czechia and South Korea.
