The airport is located about 10 km from the Iranian border.
The Nakhchivan airport in Azerbaijan was attacked by drones coming from Iran. According to Reuters, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the attack by Iranian drones.
The ministry reported that two people were injured and that Azerbaijan summoned the Iranian ambassador, reserving the right to respond. A video, shared by a source close to the government, shows black smoke near the terminal of Nakhchivan International Airport.
Earlier, on the morning of February 28, Israeli forces carried out a series of strikes on Iran, including explosions in Tehran. Hezbollah facilities in Lebanon were also targeted. In response, Iran launched “dozens” of ballistic missiles at Israel and struck a U.S. base in Bahrain. Reports indicate that multiple explosions were heard in the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar, where U.S. bases are located.
Against this backdrop, Azerbaijan deployed its troops to the border with Iran and placed them on high alert. All leaves for soldiers, sergeants, and officers were canceled, and those already on leave were recalled. Drone and low-altitude aircraft defense systems were also installed along the border.
