Ukrainian law enforcement has detained a 21-year-old local resident in connection with explosions in Bucha on March 23, according to the National Police of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine.
Investigators say the suspect was recruited and manipulated by an unknown individual who contacted him through an online video game. According to his testimony, the contact later began blackmailing him, claiming to know his mother’s whereabouts and allegedly monitoring her via drone. He was then allegedly ordered to plant explosive devices in exchange for her safety.
The SBU stated that the suspect received instructions from Russian handlers to assemble two improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Each device was equipped with a mobile phone for remote detonation.
The explosives were allegedly placed in residential areas: one near a building entrance under a bench, and another near a waste container. Authorities opened a criminal case under Article 258(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act). Investigations are ongoing to establish all circumstances and possible accomplices.
Earlier that day, an initial explosion damaged windows in an apartment building, followed by a second blast that injured two police officers responding to the scene.
Officials continue to warn the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects to authorities immediately.
