Iran carried out a drone attack on a joint base of Kurdish Peshmerga forces and French troops in the Makhmour area of Iraq, Reuters reports.
According to the governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, and a security source, at least six French soldiers were wounded in the strike. They were taken to hospital for treatment.
Local sources said several explosions were heard during the attack at the base located near Erbil International Airport, and large fires broke out in some areas of the facility. Fire crews are currently working to contain the blazes, while security measures in the region have been raised to the highest level.
Earlier on Thursday, a drone struck an Italian military base near Erbil. According to Italy’s defense minister, the attack targeted a facility hosting personnel of the NATO.
Late in the evening on March 1, a drone also hit the British military base RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus — the largest overseas air base of the Royal Air Force.
