U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States does not need assistance from Ukraine to defend against Iranian drones. He made the statement in an interview with Fox News Radio.
“We don’t need their [Ukraine’s] help in defending against drones. We know more about drones than anyone. In fact, we have the best drones in the world,” Trump said.
Earlier, Trump also claimed that Iran would “soon capitulate.” According to Axios, he made the remark during a call with leaders of the G7.
Within 24 hours of the conversation, Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei delivered his first public statement, vowing that the country would continue fighting.
At the same time, several European leaders urged Trump to end the war quickly, stressing that the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened for global shipping as soon as possible. Trump responded that the situation in the strait was improving and that commercial vessels should resume operations there. That same night, at least two oil tankers were set on fire off the coast of Iraq.
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that, at Washington’s request, Ukraine has already sent air defense experts and interceptor drones to the Middle East to help protect American military bases. He also noted that 11 countries — including Iran’s neighbors, several European states, and the United States — have asked Kyiv for assistance in countering Iranian Shahed drones.
