U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons and signaled a potential deal between the two countries, according to Reuters.

Speaking about recent contacts, Trump claimed that Tehran initiated communication to avoid potential U.S. strikes on its energy infrastructure — strikes he had previously threatened if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was not restored.

“They want to make a deal. We are fully ready for that,” Trump said, adding that there is a “very serious chance” of reaching an agreement.

He also stated that the U.S. had been prepared to strike Iran’s largest power plant but held off after contact was made.

“They will never have nuclear weapons. They agreed to that,” Trump said, referring to Iran.

Trump added that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen soon if the deal materializes, predicting that oil prices would “drop sharply” once an agreement is reached.

However, Iranian officials have denied holding negotiations with the United States. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Trump’s statements are part of an effort to lower energy prices and buy time for potential military actions.
