Most EU countries have declined to join Trump’s “Peace Council.”

According to the Financial Times, many European nations fear that the council could sideline the UN as the main platform for resolving global conflicts. Additional concerns arose from the inclusion of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the council.

Trump announced the creation of the Peace Council on January 16, with an executive committee including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Invitations were sent to leaders of 49 countries and the European Commission to oversee post-war governance in the Gaza Strip.

While Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban confirmed receiving an invitation, Norway refused, citing conflicts with UN principles. Canada may join but is reportedly unwilling to pay the $1 billion participation fee.
