Restrictions on Starlink satellite communications could undermine one of Ukraine’s most effective ways of defending against Russia’s jet-powered Shahed drones, presidential adviser Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov warned on October 14.
Beskrestnov said Starlink is used to control Ukrainian interceptor drones designed to shoot down the faster Russian attack drones. He argued that the new restrictions could deprive Ukraine of one of its few effective options for protecting its airspace.
The warning comes after SpaceX introduced restrictions on the operation of Starlink’s military-grade Starshield terminals while in motion. Ukrainian military sources reported that connections were being lost when terminals exceeded the newly imposed speed threshold of approximately 160 km/h. The changes reportedly disrupted several drone missions, with no prior warning given to Ukraine’s Defense Forces.
The impact extends beyond long-range drone operations and frontline logistics. According to Ukrainian military sources, the restrictions are also complicating missions involving interceptor and mid-range strike drones, as well as reconnaissance and communications relays.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry is in contact with the United States, SpaceX and NATO partners to address the restrictions. Officials are collecting information from military units and reviewing alternative communications channels.
Beskrestnov said the restrictions could significantly weaken Ukraine’s ability to counter jet-powered Shaheds, which are more difficult to intercept than slower drones.
