Why Russia’s Oreshnik misses targets

Despite being presented by the Kremlin as one of Russia’s most advanced weapons, the Oreshnik missile system has faced growing scrutiny over its real-world effectiveness. Military analysts point to a key vulnerability: limited targeting accuracy compared with the expectations created by Russian officials.

According to experts, even highly destructive ballistic missiles can lose much of their military value if they fail to strike intended targets precisely. Reports have highlighted cases in which attacks allegedly aimed at military infrastructure instead damaged civilian areas, warehouses, garages, or other non-military sites.

Analysts argue that the missile’s effectiveness depends not only on its speed and payload but also on the quality of intelligence, guidance systems, and targeting data. Any weaknesses in these areas can significantly reduce the weapon’s operational impact.

While Russian authorities continue to describe the Oreshnik as a strategic breakthrough, critics say its battlefield performance has not always matched the image promoted by Moscow. They contend that precision, rather than sheer destructive power, remains the decisive factor in modern warfare.
