Residents of Russian-occupied Oleshky in Ukraine’s Kherson region who agree to leave during a temporary ceasefire will initially be evacuated to Russia or occupied Crimea before being able to return to Ukrainian-controlled territory, the Financial Times reports.
According to the newspaper, evacuees will have the opportunity to travel to territory controlled by Ukraine after arriving in Russia or Crimea.
The FT recalled President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s warning that Russia would seek to clear mines in a way that directs people toward Russia. He said the occupying forces intended to exploit the process to create the impression that thousands of Ukrainian citizens were voluntarily choosing to leave for Russia.
David Arakhamia, head of the parliamentary faction of President Zelenskyy’s Servant of the People party, said a ceasefire in southern Ukraine began at 3 a.m. Kyiv time and would remain in effect until November 1.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has also said that US First Lady Melania Trump’s peace initiatives could be extended to other conflict zones.
