Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow’s war against Ukraine would continue and could intensify, according to a statement published by Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Telegram.
Lavrov warns of escalation
Lavrov claimed that the situation surrounding Ukraine was worsening.
“This war will therefore continue and, I would even say, has a tendency to escalate,” he said during a meeting with chief editors of African media outlets.
Russia praises Trump’s administration
Lavrov said US President Donald Trump’s administration remained open to dialogue despite supporting Ukraine, including by supplying weapons sold to European countries and providing satellite intelligence.
He said the administration supported peace negotiations and dialogue across a wide range of issues.
Lavrov criticizes Europe
Lavrov also criticized European countries, claiming they had refused until recently to participate in any contacts with Russia.
He said Europeans had now come to recognize the need for negotiations, although he claimed their politicians had offered nothing new.
Earlier, Lavrov said Russia would not agree to a ceasefire to allow Ukraine to hold presidential elections. He has also claimed that European leaders’ calls to prepare for a possible armed confrontation with Russia could provoke a war.
