Ukraine is requesting an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following a wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities that has killed and injured numerous civilians.

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, sent a formal letter to the president of the Security Council requesting the meeting.

“I have just signed a letter to the president of the UN Security Council requesting an emergency meeting devoted to Russia’s new wave of barbaric attacks against civilians in Ukraine,” the diplomat said.

According to Melnyk, Russian forces have killed 20 residents of cities far from the front line with Shahed drones in recent days.

“Following Russia’s latest atrocities against Ukrainian civilians in Dnipro, Chernihiv and Kremenchuk, where Russian missiles deliberately killed 20 Ukrainians and injured dozens more, we are convening an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council,” Melnyk said in a video address recorded at UN headquarters in New York.

Melnyk noted that discussions about Russian aggression do not always lead to practical action. He also questioned the effectiveness of Security Council meetings, which so far have not resulted in a tangible improvement in the situation.

Nevertheless, Ukraine wants to draw attention to the scale of the consequences of Russian attacks and seek stronger international pressure on Moscow through the Security Council, the UN General Assembly and its committees.

According to the diplomat, the emergency meeting is expected to take place in the coming days.

A Russian drone strike on a railway platform in Dnipro killed 14 people. On the same day, October 29, Russian forces attacked central Chernihiv with a drone, killing two 15-year-old girls.
