Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has urged the media and the public to examine South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun’s actual remarks carefully, saying there is no question of a break in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi made the statement at a briefing.

Diplomatic relations with South Korea

Tykhyi said reports in Ukrainian and foreign media suggesting that South Korea was preparing to sever diplomatic ties with Ukraine were inaccurate.

He urged people to listen to Cho’s original remarks, which were made in response to a question about whether the situation could escalate to a level that would threaten diplomatic relations.

According to Tykhyi, Cho answered hypothetically, saying that a rupture could occur if tensions continued to escalate. However, both sides are working to prevent further escalation.

“Somehow, that answer was turned into a headline suggesting that he had raised the possibility of breaking diplomatic relations,” Tykhyi said.

He added that the minister’s remarks had been taken out of context and urged the media not to amplify speculation amid the recent controversies.
