Ukraine’s Defense Forces maintained a ceasefire in the Kherson region to allow a humanitarian mission in occupied Oleshky, while Russian troops used the pause to strengthen their positions, Ukraine’s General Staff said.
“During the ceasefire introduced for the humanitarian operation in Oleshky, units of Ukraine’s Defense Forces observed the truce and acted strictly within the agreed terms,” the General Staff said in a Telegram statement.
The ceasefire enabled humanitarian supplies to be delivered and allowed Ukrainian residents who wished to leave Oleshky to return to territory controlled by Ukraine.
However, the General Staff said Russian forces had used the humanitarian pause to reinforce their positions.
“During the ceasefire, we recorded rotations of Russian units, the strengthening of positions, the expansion of anti-drone defenses along roads and an increase in logistical activity, including ammunition deliveries,” the statement said.
Ceasefire in Oleshky ends
Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said late the previous evening that the ceasefire around Oleshky, which had been in effect from Oct. 27 through Nov. 1, had officially ended.
He said Ukraine was working with Russia to explore the possibility of further humanitarian measures, stressing the importance of preserving this channel of cooperation.
Following the humanitarian mission, US First Lady Melania Trump said the operation offered hope for establishing lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia. She also expressed hope that the Oleshky mission would mark a starting point on the path toward peace.
