“The main problem is its composition”: Merz explains why Germany rejected the ‘Board of Peace’
Germany cannot accept the invitation to join the “Board of Peace” in its current form for structural and constitutional reasons, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said. As DW recalls, Merz had previously stated that the composition of the body is unacceptable for Germany under constitutional law. It is believed that the key issue is that Russia and Belarus were also invited to take part.
“We are, of course, ready to consider other, new forms of cooperation with the United States,” Merz stressed.
He added that such formats should help advance peace “in different regions of the world” — not only in Gaza and the Middle East, but also in Ukraine.
Earlier, the White House mistakenly included Belgium on the list of countries that had joined U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative. Brussels later denied this.
