U.S. President Donald Trump no longer wants further strikes on Iran’s energy sector after Israel attacked the key Iranian gas field South Pars gas field.
According to The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed U.S. officials, Trump was aware of and supported the Israeli strike on the facility as a signal to Iran, which has been blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Sources say Trump believes Tehran understood the “message,” and the U.S. president is now opposed to further attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure.
At the same time, officials do not rule out that Trump could again support strikes on energy facilities depending on Tehran’s future actions. Meanwhile, Fawaz Gerges, a professor of international relations at the London School of Economics, warned that post-war Iran risks turning into “another North Korea.”
