US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday, January 17, that Washington will impose tariffs on imports from eight European countries that do not support the idea of US control over Greenland. He made the statement on his Truth Social platform.

According to Trump, starting February 1, 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland will face a 10% tariff on all goods exported to the United States. From June 1, 2026, the tariff will increase to 25% and remain in place until an agreement on the “full and final acquisition of Greenland” is reached.

Trump said the United States has been trying to secure such a deal for more than 150 years, but Denmark has consistently refused. He claimed the US has long subsidized Denmark and other European countries without adequate compensation and argued that Greenland is critical to global security. Trump also stated that the US remains open to negotiations with Denmark and other countries opposing the purchase of the island.
