Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre discussed steps to de-escalate attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

“Alex and Jonas clearly told the Russian leader that real de-escalation measures are needed regarding our energy sector and infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said.

He added that he had discussed with the European leaders preparations for a trilateral meeting scheduled for November involving negotiating teams from Ukraine, the United States and Russia.

“Finland and Norway, as countries bordering Russia, have a particular interest in sound and reliable security arrangements,” Zelenskyy said.

The discussions also covered possible formats for cooperation between Ukraine and its European partners that could help sustain diplomatic efforts, strengthen defence and improve collective security, he added.

On October 27, Stubb and Støre held a phone call with Putin to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine and possible ways to end it.

Before the call, the Finnish and Norwegian leaders consulted Kyiv to convey Ukraine’s position ahead of peace talks in Abu Dhabi.

The Kremlin later released its account of the conversation between Putin and the two European leaders.
