Khartia Corps joins Yermak’s legal aid program, sparking controversy

The Khartia Army Corps has joined the “Advokat+” legal support program launched by former Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak, triggering criticism, including from within the unit.

Ukrainian serviceman and writer Serhiy Zhadan publicly questioned the decision, saying he would not want to be represented by lawyers from the initiative. He also called on the corps to explain the cooperation openly.

Khartia commander Ihor Obolienskyi defended the decision, saying Yermak had supported the unit since its early formation in 2023 and helped secure resources for its development. He stressed that participation in the program is voluntary and that servicemen can decide whether to use its services.

Khartia founder Vsevolod Kozhemiako also backed the command’s decision, arguing that military units have to seek additional opportunities to improve their support and resources.
