President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Miami to discuss ending the war. The Kremlin immediately rejected the possibility, calling such a meeting “impossible,” France 24 reports.
In an interview published Saturday, Zelenskyy said he was prepared to meet Putin at the G20 summit, scheduled for December 14–15. He argued that Ukraine is in a stronger negotiating position because of Russia’s losses on the battlefield.
It remains unclear whether Putin plans to attend the summit.
“It is impossible,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told AFP journalists in New Delhi, reiterating Moscow’s position that any meeting with Zelenskyy could take place only in Moscow.
Asked whether the Kremlin would consider another location, Peskov said Russia remains ready for such a meeting — but “in Moscow.”
The remarks came a day after Peskov said the Kremlin was seeking a new trilateral meeting involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States and claimed that the possibility had already been discussed with U.S. negotiators.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow viewed the latest U.S. approach to negotiations positively because Washington was taking what Russia calls “realities on the ground” into account.
