US President Donald Trump said on October 28 that he expects to meet soon with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing progress in US-Russia relations over the war in Ukraine.
“I think we’ve made significant progress in our relationship with Russia — in the context of Russia and Ukraine. There will be a meeting soon, and I think significant progress has been made,” Trump told reporters.
Asked which meeting he meant, Trump replied: “A meeting with President Putin and President Zelenskyy.”
Background
On October 27, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held a phone call with Putin to discuss ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. They later spoke with Zelenskyy, with upcoming talks involving Ukraine, the United States and Russia among the topics discussed.
Technical-level trilateral talks are reportedly planned for Abu Dhabi in the first half of November. The prospect of resuming negotiations emerged following earlier diplomatic contacts.
However, Trump’s remarks do not mean a meeting between the three leaders has been finalized. He did not announce a specific date for a summit.
