Russia carried out a massive overnight attack on Ukraine on January 24, launching more than 375 attack drones and 21 missiles of various types. Ukraine’s air defense forces managed to intercept the majority of the incoming targets.
This was reported by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Telegram and by the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“Last night Russia launched a massive attack on our regions — more than 370 attack drones and 21 missiles of various types. Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions, were hit,” Zelensky said.
In Kharkiv, Russian strikes damaged a maternity hospital, a dormitory housing internally displaced persons, a medical college, and residential buildings. Dozens of people were injured, including a child. In Kyiv and the surrounding region, the main target of the attack was energy infrastructure.
“Sadly, one person was killed in this attack. My condolences to the family and loved ones. All necessary services are working at the impact sites, eliminating the consequences of Russian strikes. Rescuers, medics, utility workers, energy crews, and repair teams are on the ground. I thank everyone involved and all our air defense warriors who repelled the attack,” the president said.
Zelensky stressed that every such Russian strike on energy facilities proves the urgency of accelerating air defense supplies.
“We count on a response and support from all our partners. Every missile for Patriot, NASAMS, and other systems helps protect critical infrastructure and get people through the cold of winter. We must implement everything we agreed on with President Trump in Davos regarding air defense,” he added.
Air Force data
According to the military, from 6:00 p.m. on January 23 until the morning of January 24, Russia carried out a combined strike using missiles of various air- and ground-launched types and attack drones.
In total, Air Force radar units detected 396 aerial attack assets:
2 Zircon (3M22) anti-ship missiles (launched from temporarily occupied Crimea)
12 Kh-22/Kh-32 cruise missiles (launched from the airspace over Russia’s Bryansk region)
6 Iskander-M / S-300 ballistic missiles (launched from Russia’s Bryansk region and temporarily occupied Crimea)
1 Kh-59/69 guided авиа missile (launched from the airspace over Russia’s Kursk region)
375 attack drones of the Shahed, Gerbera, Italmus types and other UAVs (launched from Kursk, Orel, Millerovo, Shatalovo, and Bryansk in Russia, as well as from temporarily occupied Donetsk). About 250 of them were Shahed drones.
The main direction of the attack was Kyiv region. A notable feature was the use of strategic aviation aircraft armed with Kh-22/Kh-32 missiles to strike the Ukrainian capital.
The air assault was repelled by aircraft, surface-to-air missile units, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of Ukraine’s Defense Forces.
As of 09:00, air defenses had intercepted or suppressed 372 targets — 15 missiles and 357 drones:
9 Kh-22/Kh-32 cruise missiles
5 Iskander-M / S-300 ballistic missiles
1 Kh-59/69 guided missile
357 attack drones of various types
Direct hits were recorded by 2 missiles and 18 drones at 17 locations, while debris from downed drones fell at 12 locations. Data on four enemy missiles is still being уточнюється.
“The attack is ongoing. Several hostile UAVs remain in Ukrainian airspace. Please follow safety rules,” the Air Force warned.
Consequences of the January 24 attack
Kyiv was hit hardest. Damage and destruction were recorded in five districts of the capital. One person was killed and at least four others were injured.
Due to the масштабна attack, parts of Kyiv’s left bank were left without heating and water. Nearly 6,000 buildings lost heat supply.
Kharkiv was also heavily targeted by attack drones overnight, with nearly 20 people reported injured.
