Russian forces carried out a massive overnight attack on Ukraine on January 20, causing damage in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Sumy and other regions, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday morning.
He noted that Russia used a large number of ballistic and cruise missiles, along with more than 300 attack drones.
“Our air defense forces engaged a significant number of targets. A day before this strike, we finally received the necessary missiles, and this helped substantially. Every support package matters. Missiles for Patriots, NASAMS and other air defense systems are critically needed,” Zelensky wrote. “The direct task of our entire diplomatic system is to ensure Ukraine has sufficient air defense capabilities. Partners must not fail on this — air defense missiles are real protection for human lives.”
Repair crews, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and all necessary forces are currently working at the sites of the strikes. A coordination call is planned to outline the consequences of the attack and the resources needed to restore electricity, heating and water supplies.
Zelensky added that the most difficult situation is in Kyiv, where more than 5,000 buildings have been left without heating. “It is important that the world does not remain silent about this. Russia cannot be treated as equal to other countries while it is focused solely on killing and abusing people,” he said.
