The port of Primorsk, which handles around 60% of Russia’s seaborne oil exports, was hit by a series of explosions overnight on March 23, forcing the shutdown of a key oil terminal.
According to regional authorities, the facility — the largest oil terminal on the Baltic Sea — came under a drone attack. The port had previously suspended operations following similar strikes.
Leningrad region governor Alexander Drozdenko said that Russian air defenses and electronic warfare systems shot down more than 50 drones.
The site, located roughly 920 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, sustained damage to a fuel storage tank, triggering a fire. Emergency services are currently working to contain the blaze, and personnel have been evacuated.
Primorsk is a ключовий (key) element of Russia’s Baltic Pipeline System and a critical hub for exporting oil to global markets.
