A Russian drone struck the central headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv, opposite St. Sophia’s Cathedral, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

According to Zelenskyy, the drone was directed specifically at the office of SBU acting head Oleksandr Poklad. Poklad was not in his office at the time of the strike.

A fire broke out in the building following the impact. Emergency services are working at the scene, and assistance is being provided to those affected.

Zelenskyy instructed Poklad to prepare a “adequate, tangible and, if possible, symmetrical” response to the Russian strike, adding that Ukrainian forces would support it once preparations are complete.

Damage and casualties

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said the fire at the non-residential building in Shevchenkivskyi district had been extinguished.

The strike caused the collapse of part of the floor structure and an exterior wall. Emergency services remain at the site.

Nine people were injured in the district following the drone strike, and seven were hospitalized.

The strike came after a week of intensified Russian attacks on Kyiv. On September 1, a combined attack involving Zircon and Iskander missiles and jet-powered drones killed eight people, including three children.

The following night, Russia launched 174 drones and missiles, with strikes recorded at 16 locations. On September 2, Russian drones damaged a residential building, hospital and school in Kyiv.

On September 3, a drone struck a nine-story residential building in Holosiivskyi district, while on the morning of September 4 a Russian strike caused a fire at an industrial facility in Brovary.
