President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia attacked airports in Kyiv and Boryspil overnight, suggesting the strikes may have been a deliberate response to reports that U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys could travel to Ukraine by air.
According to Zelenskyy, Russia had not targeted the airports in this way for a long time, which he said indicates the attacks were intentional.
“Russian-Iranian Shaheds in response to American diplomacy. We have recorded this Russian step and next week will accordingly adjust our operation regarding Russian airspace,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that Ukraine posed no threat to the diplomatic process and would not create such threats.
Temporary ceasefire attempt fails
The attacks came as U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were preparing for visits to Moscow and Kyiv.
The two officials are taking U.S. proposals on ending the war to Russia on Saturday and are expected to travel to Ukraine on Sunday. Their planned visit to Kyiv had been delayed several times over the past few months.
Bloomberg previously reported that expectations in Moscow for the latest talks were extremely low, after earlier rounds of negotiations failed to produce significant progress.
Against this backdrop, the latest Russian strikes have raised concerns that Moscow may be deliberately undermining conditions for the planned diplomatic meetings.
